To be unconventional is to not be bound by anything ordinary. It is the very nature of being different and expressive. It means pushing your creativity’s boundaries and embracing your unique way of thinking and expressing yourself.
If you follow any of the MODE editorials we do, you will notice that we love to do things a little differently. We love pushing boundaries, thinking creatively, and just playfully nudging our inhibitions out of our comfort zone.
The purpose of creating unconventional settings in our editorials is to get the reader thinking and feeling about what we’ve created. And the hope is they will be inspired to create something unique for their own wedding day.
The wedding industry can be cookie-cutter in its approach to wedding design, and we are quite keen on breaking that mould. I tell every bride I work with the same thing…find your unique expression. Ensure that your stamp is put on the wedding day and get a team of people who can creatively design alongside you to bring you a unique, beautiful and timeless wedding.
HOW CAN YOU GET CREATIVE?
- Write down a list of all the things you like and how they make you feel. Do you love nature and go for walks every day? What do you admire when you do that? Is it the fresh air, the wind in the trees, the birds singing? Do you search out the indigenous flowers you see along your path? Do you sail? Do you paint? See where I’m going with this…
- Translate your passions into design. This is not always the easiest thing to do, but getting help from a stylist will make it much easier for you. If you love the ocean, tell your stylist and create something unique around that theme. It does not always mean shells and sand! Do you paint? Then perhaps incorporating watercolours in your stationery design is the key!
- Use textures. Let nature inspire you. There is a smorgasbord of elements out there that we can use to create something incredible. Logs, branches, vines, bush, fruit, veg…the list is seriously long and incredibly beautiful.
- Don’t overdo it unless you’re a professional. LOL. Honestly, there is a balance that should be struck in design. When to know to stop and when to go all out. Again, getting the help of a stylist is vital in pulling off an unconventional and successful design for your wedding day.
The bottom line is, express yourself! Try new things, push your own boundaries, then step back and evaluate what you’ve created. We learn as we experiment. Don’t be afraid of it. Your unique expression is something the world should see!
