If you’re here, then you have probably read Part I of my top questions to ask when viewing wedding venues. I mean, it is really important to find the perfect fit for you as a couple. And honestly, when you stand in that space you will just know. You will be excited and hopeful and bursting with anticipation for your special day.
But before you go find that spot, have a look at my last few questions that I think you will find helpful when doing your viewings.
What do you include in terms of décor?
Most venues have standard items available. Always make sure you take a look at them to see if you are happy to use them as part of your styling palette. Your stylist, if you make use of one, or even a décor or floral supplier, will want to know what the venue provides and what you want to use. If you are pulling a DIY, then check these carefully to make sure you have what you need. Also, do check if that have any décor restrictions. Many venues don’t like candles on their tables, or items to be hung from the ceiling or walls.
Do you have noise restrictions in the area?
Party crowds don’t want to be shushed at midnight! Need I say more? Check the time restrictions and costs for going past midnight to include this into your budget planning. Also bear in mind that at most venues, when the cut off time is set, all guests are to vacate the property.
What is your cancellation policy?
This is a biggie, especially after the year we shall not mention. Both parties here, venue and client, need to be protected and well informed on the policy of cancellation in any event. Whether that is pandemic, acts of nature, illness, breakup (eugh sorry have to mention it) or just a date change.
How many bathrooms are available?
Don’t laugh, I have had couples move venues due to lack of sufficient tinkle space for guests. And I can totally understand that. Have a peek inside the restrooms and just make sure you’re happy. Can’t hurt.
Is there enough safe parking for our guests?
Pretty self-explanatory, but some venues are not geared for many cars, so just check it out so you are informed and can make plans. Remember to ask about security guards and how many patrol and keep watch and for how long into the evening.
What is the rain plan?
I know this is a touchy subject, because we get our heart set on plan A and dream of what it is going to look like. But you do need to make sure that if the heavens open up and you need cover, that plan B is not too far off from your plan A. This will just make it easier to handle (emotionally for you) and your suppliers (preparation is key), should you need to make this change.
What is the best month / season at your venue?
For brides wanting a specific aesthetic this is an important question. Because, if the outdoors is your focus and you want green and lush, you need to know which month is best for them. And let’s be real as well, this is not something that can be predicted with 100% accuracy either. Weather happens. But a ballpark idea is still better than nothing!
Do we get some help on the day?
This is good to know in terms of floral and décor setup. Whether you are doing it yourself, or you have a stylist, florist or décor company in, they will need to know the time parameters that they are allowed to setup in and if they have help from venue staff at all.
If we use external décor items, does the venue clear and wash the items?
Same as above, whether it is you or a company, this information will impact your quotation from the suppliers if they need to arrange for extra staff to help clear / wash etc.
Do you have a corkage fee, and what are your rules on bringing in our own alcohol?
This is a very popular question as clients feel they can save some money bringing in their own alcohol. What you need to bear in mind is that there are other avenues to consider when and if you’re allowed to do this. Barmen, ice, storage, cleaning, clearing to name a few. Get the bar list pricing from the venue so you know what the charges are for each item.
Do we get a venue coordinator on the day?
This is a lady or gent that handles the items pertaining to the venue and they will liaise with your wedding planner should you have one on the smooth running of your wedding day. Please bear in mind there is a HUGE difference between a venue coordinator and a wedding planner. Check out my blog on that topic!
Do you have any suggestions and recommendations for me?
This is a very cool question, as the venue has been hosting weddings for a while, and they will have tips, tricks, and great ideas for you. So be open minded when chatting to them, they hold the key to the secrets of their venue 🙂
Now, off you go and find that perfect space for you and your loved ones to celebrate in! And if you need help, you know where to find me!
Lee xoxo
